Passport Renewal Fees in India: Normal & Tatkaal Charges

The first thing to check if your passport is about to expire or has already expired is the passport renewal fees. The updated passport charges are the new changes in passport fees which have been made after a big change for a long time in passport fees, about 14 years.

The guide reflects information on the passport renewal fees in place after a long period of no change for booklets, minor and senior citizens, lost passports and damaged passports. You will also find out how to pay the passport renewal charges online, what documents are required and how to avoid paying unnecessary fees.

Note: India does not have a specific “renewal” service. A re-issue is applied for if your passport is expired. The passport renewal cost is the same, thus this guide uses the terms “renewal” and “re-issue” interchangeably. 

What is the Passport Renewal Fees in India (2026): Charges & Cost?

The normal processing time for adults renewing their passports is INR 2,500 and INR 3,500 for 36 and 60-page booklets, respectively. Tatkaal costs INR 5,000 and INR 6,000. For minors, it's INR 1,750 (normal) and INR 4,250 (Tatkal 36- pages). The 60-page passport fee will apply to all passports issued on or after July 1, 2026.

Before July 2026, the same 36-page passport cost INR 1,500. Today's cost of passport renewal is about 67% higher, at INR 1,000. The good news is that it will cost the same to reissue and for a new passport. It costs the same for your first, second and third passports.

New Ordinary Passport Renewal (re-issue) and fresh application Fees in India for Adults (18-35 years) is INR 2,500 for ordinary passports with 36 pages and INR 3,500 for passports with 60 pages, will be effective from July 1, 2026. Standard Passport Renewal Fees (Adults 18+)

Passport renewal fees for adults (applying on or after July 1, 2026):

• 36-Page Booklet (Normal): INR 2,500 (Tatkaal: INR 5,000)

• 60-Page Booklet (Normal): INR 3,500 (Tatkaal: INR 6,000)

• Lost/Damaged 36-Page Booklet: INR 5,000 (Tatkaal: INR 7,500)

• Lost/Damaged 60-Page Booklet: INR 6,000 (Tatkaal: INR 8,500)

Minor Passport Renewal Fees (Under 18)

Minors pay less. The passports renewal cost for children below 18 years is:

• 36-Page Booklet (Normal): INR 1,750 (Tatkaal: INR 4,250)

• Lost/Damaged 36-page passport: INR 4,250 (Tatkaal: INR 6,750)

Key Details to Know

• Discounts: For fresh applications (not re-issue/renewal) 10% discount is provided to children up to 8 years of age and above 60 years.

• Non-refundable: Passport fees are not refundable after they have been paid.

• Tatkaal service: Tatkaal service comes with an additional, flat fee of INR 2,500 for ‘fast track’ and ‘urgent’ processing. Passports are issued within 1 to 3 working days for the majority of Tatkaal Passports.

• Same fee for e-passports: India now has e-passports which charges the same fee as a normal passport. No extra cost for the chip (the same as a normal passport).

• Living abroad? US dollars are charged by Indian missions, and the same schedule is in effect. For instance, a 36-page re-issue has a normal processing fee of USD 125.

Passport Renewal Fees for 36-Page and 60-Page Passports

A 36-page adult passport costs INR 2,500 (Normal) or INR 5,000 (Tatkaal). A 60-page adult passport costs INR 3,500 (Normal) or INR 6,000 (Tatkaal). Both have a 10-year validity period.

The only difference between the two booklets is how many pages they have; now it's a INR 1000 difference. It was earlier just a INR 500. This implies that the normal speed of renewal of a passport with a 60-page booklet will be INR 3,500. So, here's the comparison of the renewal fees of the passports: 

So which one is the best? Based on the frequency of your trips.

• If travelling once or twice a year, choose a random 36-page book. It's sufficient for most and is cheaper.

• If you have to travel a lot for work, choose 60 pages if you are picking up visas and stamps fast, choose 500 pages. Schengen, US and UK visas fill up quickly.

Imagine the following. In year six, if the booklet becomes full, you will have to pay a new re-issue fee of INR 2,500 or more for a new booklet. Then the additional INR 1,000 you pay now, can save you the trouble later. But if you are a student or a first-time flyer, then 36 pages is typically enough.

Passport Renewal Fees for Minors and Senior Citizens

The fee for a minor's passport renewal is INR 1750 (Normal) or INR 4250 (Tatkaal) for 36 pages of the booklet. Passport renewal fees are the same as for other adults for senior citizens on a re-issue. There is a 10% discount for seniors for NEW applications only.

• Minors (under 18). Fees to renew the passport for a child are set at a lower rate because the child's passport expires after a shorter period of time: 5 years or until the child reaches age 18, whichever is earlier. Some things to be aware of:

• Minors has only a 36 page option. There is no 60-page passport for children with the fee schedule.

• If your child is 15-18 years old, you may have to apply for a 36-page passport. That will cost you INR 2500, equal to an adult! This will require you to submit a Non-ECR eligibility certificate as well.

• Up to 8 years old: 10% discount applies to a child's passport, but not re-issued.

Senior citizens (above 60). Here is where things go awry for many. Yes, senior citizens receive a 10% off discount, but it's only for newly submitted applications. If the passport is expiring and you are 65 years old, it is a re-issue; the discount does not apply. The costs of renewing your passport will be the same as for any other adult.

Passport Renewal Fees for Lost or Damaged Passports

The passport of an adult costs INR 5,000 for 36 pages, and INR 6,000 for 60 pages if the adult loses or damages his/her passport. For a minor, it's INR 4,250. These fees would be higher than regular passport renewal fees and Tatkaal would charge an additional INR 2,500 if permitted.

You cannot renew a regular passport if you have lost your passport, or it is in poor condition. A replacement passport is required with a cost about double that of the original. The complete renewal passport expenses table for replacements: 

Important Notes:

Here are some pointers to keep in mind:

• Tatkaal is limited. It is usually not available for lost or damaged passports and is not for the sale of passports. It can be used when your passport is damaged as long as your name, photo and passport number remain legible. Please cross-check your case with the Passport Seva portal always.

• Additional paper will be needed. If your passport is lost or stolen, an affidavit as prescribed by Passport Seva along with a copy of FIR (Police Complaint) will be required. Verification by the police is also more likely.

• The other causes of a new booklet are less expensive. If only personal particulars are being changed or the stamp of the ECR has been deleted, the fee is INR 2,500 (36 pages) or INR 3,500 (60 pages) which is equivalent to a normal re-issue.

Note: It is a costly mistake to lose a passport. Store it in a safe place, and photograph the first and last pages for documentation.

How to Pay Passport Renewal Fees Online?

Knowing the steps required to pay for passport renewal fees makes the process a breeze. Payment takes precedence and the appointment slot is only available once payment is received.

• Sign up or log in to the Passport Seva website (mPassport Seva app).

• Choose "Apply for Fresh Passport/Re-issue of Passport" and fill in the form.

• Pick Normal or Tatkaal, and select 36 or 60 pages.

• Confirm with the fee calculator that you will be paying the correct fee.

• Make payment online; download the receipt.

• Make an appointment at the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK).

On the day please visit with your original documents. There, you'll have your picture taken and your fingerprints collected.

Ways to pay your passport renew fees:

What if something goes wrong?

• Payment succeeded but money was deducted? It is typically refunded in a bank account within approximately seven working days.

• Double charged for the same app? The additional cost will be refunded by the Regional Passport Office.

• Changed your mind? The fee isn't refundable and can't be moved to another application.

• Didn't visit the PSK? Your payment is good for one year from the first appointment date. From then on it's lost.

Note: One more thing. Beware of irrelevant charges such as an "extra INR 500 PSK fee. It is not listed in the official fee schedule, so you don't have to pay it. You must pay only through the official Passport Seva website and never pay the agent to 'waive' or 'speed up' your fee.

How Have Passport Renewal Charges Changed in 2026?

The vast majority of passport renewal fees increased from July 1, 2026. The 36-page adult fee rose from INR 1,500 to INR 2,500, and the Tatkaal add-on rose from INR 2,000 to INR 2,500.

The passport renewal fee remained unchanged for 14 years. They were amended by the Ministry of External Affairs which was mainly due to the security features, cost of chip technology and Passport Seva services. The validity of the passports remained unchanged: 10 years for adults and 5 years (until age 18) for children. 

Pro Tip: If you see any website showing INR 1,500 as the passport renewal cost, it's out of date. When you compare renewal passport fees across sites, always check the date on the page. The new fees apply to any application submitted on or after July 1, 2026.

How to Work Out Your Total Passport Renewal Cost?

To calculate the complete cost of your Passport Renewal, follow these steps:

• The total cost of passport renewal is the sum of the base fee for your Passport booklet and age, and INR 2,500 if you opt for Tatkaal. For a standard re-issue nothing is added.

• The formula is very simple, base fee plus Tatkaal add-on (if any) equals the total. 

• The passport fee listed on the calculator is the total fee for most people to renew their passport. 

• A normal renewal doesn't incur an extra fee for police verification. The only additional government fee you may incur is a Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) – this is a separate service.

To illustrate the passport charges, here are three simple examples:

• Example 1: Passport of an adult with normal 36 page size (expired): INR 2,500. This is the total amount of the passport renewal fee.

• Example 2: An adult who needs a 60-page passport quickly (Tatkaal): INR 3,500 + INR 2,500 = INR 6,000. 

• Example 3: Someone who also needs a PCC for a job or visa: INR 2,500 for the re-issue + INR 750 for the PCC = INR 3,250.

Note: Use a fee calculator before paying. It only takes about a minute and it will save you from paying the wrong passport renewal fees.

When and How to Renew Without Paying Extra?

Submit up to one year in advance of the expiration date on your passport, and be sure to select Normal processing. Make sure you have your documents in hand, and that you are able to pay an additional INR 2,500 for Tatkaal.

The most effective strategy to keep the cost of passport renewal to a minimum is to plan in advance. Renew passport early, renew fees remain at the lower amount.

• Timing: The re-issue may be renewed within one year prior to expiration as well as after expiration. In the fee schedule, there is no separate late fee. However, if your passport is very old (over three years) you may need to have your passport verified by police and additional documents might be required, delaying the process.

• For a regular re-issue, have these on hand:

• Original old passport, 2 copies of each page of the original passport (first and last two pages, ECR/Non-ECR page and observation page).

• Proof of your present address (Aadhaar, voter ID, utility bill, bank passbook with photo, or rent agreement)

• Only if required, evidence of date of birth.

• If it applies to you, non-ECR proof (for example, degree or 10th certificate).

Common Mistakes That Push Up Your Passport Renewal Cost

Most errors are the use of old fee figures, payment to agents, selecting the wrong Tatkaal, and failing to pay on time.

• A lot of people discover their renewed passport charges are more than what they expected. The vast majority of additional expenses are preventable but be alert to these:

• Adjusting for higher rates. If you are intending to pay INR 1500, but the actual amount is INR 2500, then you should not proceed with payment. In all cases, consult the Fee Calculator.

• Consider the Tatkaal fee as the total. Tatkaal is an add-on package. On a 36-page adult passport, it's INR 2,500 plus INR 2,500, so INR 5,000 in all.

• Hoping that the senior cost will be lower for renewal. The 10% concession is only valid for new applications.

• Paying an agent. The government has not approved anyone to make quicker appointments. It's possible to perform all of this on the official website.

• Wait for payment and not show up. This fee is good for 1 year from your first appointment. Otherwise, you'll be charged the new rate again.

• Choosing a child's 60 page passport. It's not suitable for children.
