What are the cut-off marks for an English test for a student visa?

Most university courses at this level now have an IELTS score of 6.0 overall, with no single band score below 5.5 (or equivalent for PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT or other tests accepted). Typically, 5.5 for foundation and pathway programmes and 5.0 for ELICOS (English-only) programmes. The test has to be conducted in a test centre (not online or at home) which is secure.

How many hours can I work while I am studying in Australia?

Up to 48 hours per 2-week period, during course periods, and no limit during course breaks. When you are enrolled in a Master's by Research or a PhD, there is no limit on work hours throughout your course of study.

What is the Temporary Graduate visa (Subclass 485), and who's eligible?

It is Australia's most popular post-study work visa, which allows graduates to remain in Australia to work for 18 months to 4 years, depending on their qualification. It will be $5,750 for the main applicant from 1st July 2026. Typically, applicants between the ages of 16 and 35, those who apply within 6 months of course completion, and those who have a higher English requirement than student visa applicants (such as IELTS 6.5 overall, with no band lower than 5.5) are eligible to apply.

Can my parents stay with me in Australia while I study?

If you are under 18 only. If so, one parent or approved guardian may apply to sponsor you for the Student Guardian visa subclass 590 to accompany you and care for you. It does not include work rights for the guardian, and it is not available after age 18.

What is the amount of money I must present for my visa application?

Access to AUD 29,710 per year for living costs (for 2026) is required in addition to your course tuition and return airfare. Please allow approximately AUD 10,394 for each accompanying spouse and approximately AUD 4,449 per dependent child.

What is the "Genuine Student (GS)" requirement?

In March 2024, it superseded the previous Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) test. There will be questions that you have to answer, and you will have to give evidence to prove that your course, your plans to study it and your connections to India are not just connections to working or migrating in Australia.
