IELTS Speaking Practice Test 31 with Sample Answers - TerraTern

This IELTS Speaking Practice Test has 3 Sections. In Part 1, you will be asked questions by your examiner for 4-5 minutes about the Teacher. In Part 2, you will be given a cue card for a monologue of 2 minutes based on the topic Describe A Time When You Ate Too Much Unhealthy Food, followed by more in-depth questions for another 4-5 minutes based on the cue card in Part 3. Overall, the speaking test takes 15 minutes.

Teacher

Q1. Do you remember your favourite teacher from school?

A. Yes, I remember my favourite teacher very clearly. She taught me English in secondary school and had a very friendly and encouraging personality. What I admired most was the way she explained difficult concepts so simply. She also motivated students to participate in class activities, which helped me become more confident.

Q2. What qualities should a good teacher have?

A. In my opinion, a good teacher should be patient, knowledgeable, and approachable. They need to understand that every student learns at a different pace, so patience is essential. In addition, they should be able to explain lessons clearly and create a positive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions.

Q3. Do you think teachers are respected in your country?

A. Yes, teachers are generally respected in my country because they play a vital role in shaping the future of young people. Many people consider teaching to be an honourable profession. However, I believe their contribution is sometimes underestimated, especially considering the amount of responsibility they carry.

Q4. Would you like to become a teacher in the future?

A. I think teaching can be a rewarding career because it allows people to share knowledge and influence others positively. Although I respect the profession, I do not see myself becoming a full-time teacher. However, I would be happy to teach specific skills or mentor others in the future.

Q5. How has teaching changed compared to the past?

A. Teaching has changed significantly over the years. In the past, it was mainly based on textbooks and traditional lectures, whereas nowadays technology plays a major role in education. Teachers use smart boards, online resources, and interactive methods to make lessons more engaging and effective.

Sample Answer

One teacher who has had a significant influence on my life is my English teacher from secondary school, whose name was Mrs Rahman. I was taught by her when I was around fourteen years old, at a stage when I was still quite shy and lacked confidence in expressing myself. She taught us English language and literature, and her classes were always the ones I looked forward to the most.

What made her different from many other teachers was her teaching style. Instead of relying only on textbooks, she used to organise group discussions, debates, and storytelling activities. These methods made the lessons far more engaging and helped students participate actively. She had an exceptional ability to explain difficult grammar rules and literary ideas in a simple and memorable way. As a result, even weaker students felt included and motivated to improve.

Personally, she influenced me greatly because she noticed potential in me that I had never recognised in myself. I was usually quiet in class, but she encouraged me to speak in front of others and take part in competitions such as essay writing and public speaking. At first, I was extremely nervous, but her constant support gradually helped me overcome my fear.

I still remember winning a small-school debate competition because she had guided me through the preparation process. That experience changed my mindset completely and made me realise the importance of confidence and communication skills.

Overall, I would say she influenced me not only academically but also personally. She inspired me to believe in my abilities, work harder, and never be afraid of challenges. Even today, I feel grateful for the positive impact she had on my life.

On the other hand, older teachers often have greater experience and classroom management skills. Ideally, students benefit from a combination of both.

Q2. Is it more important for teachers to be strict or friendly?

A. In my opinion, teachers need to maintain a balance between being strict and friendly. If they are too strict, students may feel stressed or afraid to ask questions. However, if they are overly friendly, discipline in the classroom might decline. A teacher who is firm yet approachable is usually the most effective.

Q3. How can schools encourage students to respect teachers?

A. Schools can encourage respect by teaching students good manners and creating a positive school culture. Parents also play an important role by teaching children to value education and appreciate their teachers. In addition, when teachers treat students fairly, mutual respect develops naturally.

Q4. Do you think students should be allowed to evaluate their teachers?

A. Yes, I believe students should be given the opportunity to evaluate their teachers in a respectful and constructive way. Their feedback can help schools identify strengths and areas for improvement. However, the evaluation should be fair and not based on personal dislike or temporary emotions.

Q5. Why do some people choose teaching as a career?

A. Many people choose teaching because they enjoy sharing knowledge and helping others grow. It can be a highly rewarding profession, as teachers have the chance to make a lasting impact on students’ lives. Some people are also attracted by job stability and the respect associated with the profession.

Q6. Should teachers give homework every day?

A. I do not think homework should be given every single day. While homework can reinforce what students learn in class, too much of it may create stress and reduce time for relaxation or extracurricular activities. It would be better to assign meaningful homework in moderation rather than excessive daily tasks.
