This IELTS Speaking Practice Test has 3 Sections. In Part 1, you will be asked questions for 4- 5 minutes about Housework by your examiner. In Part 2, you will be given a cue card for a monologue of 2 minutes based on the topic Describe A Shop Near Where You Live That You Sometimes Go To, followed by more in-depth questions for another 4-5 minutes based on the cue card in Part 3. Overall, the speaking test takes 15 minutes.

Housework

Q1. Do you do housework at home?

A. Yes, I do. Even though I could hire domestic help, I prefer to do it myself. I live alone in a small studio apartment, so it is quite manageable. In fact, I find housework relaxing. Whenever I feel stressed, I enjoy simple tasks like cleaning the shower, floors, and kitchen cabinets. However, I really dislike sweeping because I always seem to miss some spots.

Q2. What housework do you usually do?

A. I usually do all the basic household chores, such as washing dishes, dusting, sweeping, mopping, and cleaning the kitchen and bathroom. I normally do a deep clean every two weeks, while tidying up regularly during the week. I especially like keeping the bathroom clean, so I usually clean it once a week.

Q3. Do you like doing housework?

A. Yes, I enjoy most household chores. I am quite a tidy person, so I love seeing my home neat and spotless. The feeling of living in a clean and organised space makes all the effort worthwhile.

Q4. Did you do housework when you were a child?

A. Yes, I did. My parents made sure that all of us children helped with chores. They created a weekly rotation chart, and we earned a small allowance for completing our tasks. If we misbehaved, we were given extra chores, but if we achieved something special, such as excellent grades, we were excused from chores for a week.

Q5. Do you think children should do housework?

A. Absolutely. Even if parents can afford to hire help, housework teaches children responsibility and practical life skills. It also helps them become more independent and less spoiled. Learning these skills at a young age can benefit them later in adulthood.

Q6. Do you think men and women should share housework?

A. Definitely. I do not agree with the stereotype that only women should do housework. I believe it should be a shared responsibility. When both partners contribute, it reduces pressure on each person. However, if one partner stays at home while the other works full-time, it may be more practical for the person at home to handle most of the chores.

Sample Answer

I am a graduate-level student living with my family in Chhattisgarh. I enjoy shopping, especially because I do not have to travel far, as there is a D-Mart located very close to my home. D-Mart is a large supermarket where people can buy almost everything they need under one roof, which makes shopping both convenient and enjoyable.

The store is situated opposite my apartment on the ground floor of City Mall in Raipur. Because of its prime location, it is easy for anyone in the city to find and access. For me, it is only a short walk away, which is extremely convenient.

D-Mart offers a wide range of products, including groceries, vegetables, dairy items, frozen foods, fruits, toys, clothing, footwear, kitchenware, luggage, perfumes, small electronic gadgets, and many other household essentials. One of the best things about the store is that the prices are affordable and suitable for people from different income groups.

I visit the store quite often, sometimes even once a day. My father occasionally forgets to buy daily necessities after work, so I usually go instead. My mother also asks me to pick up items whenever guests visit our home. In addition, I sometimes stop by the store on my way back from college to buy snacks.

Overall, D-Mart has become an important part of my daily life. It saves time and effort, provides everything my family needs, and makes shopping a pleasant experience.

Q1. Why do many people prefer shopping in supermarkets rather than local markets?

A. I think many people prefer supermarkets because they are more convenient and organised. Customers can find a wide variety of products in one place, which saves both time and effort. In addition, supermarkets often offer discounts and fixed prices, so people feel more confident while shopping. However, local markets may provide fresher produce and a more personal shopping experience.

Q2. How has shopping changed in recent years?

A. Shopping has changed dramatically, mainly because of technology. Nowadays, many people prefer online shopping as it allows them to purchase products from home and compare prices easily. Cashless payment methods have also become more common. At the same time, physical stores have improved their services by offering better facilities and a wider range of goods.

Q3. Do you think online shopping will replace traditional stores in the future?

A. I do not think traditional stores will disappear completely. Although online shopping is extremely convenient, many people still prefer visiting stores to check product quality before buying. For example, when purchasing clothes or electronic devices, customers often want to see the item in person. Therefore, I believe both forms of shopping will continue to exist side by side.

Q4. What are the disadvantages of large shopping malls?

A. One disadvantage is that shopping malls may negatively affect small local businesses because customers are attracted to large stores. Another issue is that malls can become overcrowded, especially during weekends or festivals, which can be stressful. Moreover, they often encourage unnecessary spending since people are tempted by promotions and attractive displays.

Q5. Why do some people enjoy shopping as a leisure activity?

A. Some people see shopping as a form of entertainment. They enjoy exploring new products, spending time with friends or family, and relaxing in a different environment. Shopping centres also provide restaurants, cinemas, and other facilities, so people can combine shopping with recreation. For many individuals, it is a pleasant way to reduce stress.

Q6. Should children be taught how to manage money while shopping?

A. Yes, definitely. Teaching children to manage money at an early age can help them become responsible adults. For instance, they can learn how to compare prices, avoid wasting money, and understand the value of saving. These practical skills are essential in everyday life and can benefit them in the future.
