IELTS Speaking Part 1

Bakery

Q1. Do you like visiting bakeries?

A. Yes, I do. I enjoy visiting bakeries because they usually have a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The smell of freshly baked bread and pastries is always appealing. I also like trying different kinds of cakes and snacks whenever I visit a new bakery. It's a pleasant experience, even if I don't buy anything.

Q2. How often do you buy food from a bakery?

A. I usually visit a bakery once or twice a month. I often buy bread, biscuits, or pastries for my family, especially on weekends or special occasions. Sometimes I also stop by a bakery to buy a birthday cake or a dessert when we have guests at home.

Q3. What is your favourite item from a bakery?

A. My favourite bakery item is chocolate cake. I love its rich flavour and soft texture, especially when it is freshly baked. I also enjoy eating garlic bread and cheese puffs because they make great snacks. Whenever I visit a good bakery, I usually end up buying one of these.

Q4. Have bakeries changed over the years?

A. Yes, they have changed quite a lot. Modern bakeries now offer a much wider variety of products, including healthy options like whole-grain bread, sugar-free desserts, and gluten-free pastries. Many bakeries also have comfortable seating areas where customers can enjoy coffee and freshly baked food. I think they have become more like cafés than traditional bakeries.

Q5. Do you prefer homemade baked food or food from a bakery?

A. It depends on the occasion. Homemade baked food feels more personal and is often healthier because we can choose the ingredients ourselves. However, professional bakeries usually offer a greater variety and make products that are difficult to prepare at home. So, I enjoy both for different reasons.

Q6. Why do you think bakeries are so popular?

A. I think bakeries are popular because they offer fresh, convenient, and delicious food. People can quickly buy bread, cakes, or snacks without spending much time cooking. Bakeries are also associated with celebrations such as birthdays and festivals, so they are an important part of many people's lives. In addition, the attractive displays and pleasant aroma make it hard for customers to resist buying something.

One bakery that I still remember clearly is Flurys on Park Street in Kolkata. I visited it last December with my cousin Ananya after we had spent the afternoon shopping nearby.

Although I had heard about Flurys for years, it was my first visit. As soon as we walked in, I noticed its elegant interior, with pink-and-white décor, glass display counters, and neatly arranged cakes and pastries. The bakery had a calm atmosphere, and it felt very different from the crowded bakeries I usually visit.

After looking at the menu for a while, I ordered a slice of New York cheesecake and a cup of hot cappuccino, while Ananya chose a chicken puff and a black forest pastry. The cheesecake was incredibly smooth and creamy, with a light biscuit base that wasn't too sweet. It was honestly one of the best desserts I have ever tasted. We spent nearly an hour there chatting, enjoying the food, and watching people come in to buy cakes for birthdays and other celebrations.

What impressed me the most was the service. One of the staff members noticed that we were taking photos and offered to recommend some of the bakery's signature desserts. He even told us a little about the bakery's long history, which made the experience feel more personal.

Before leaving, I bought a small box of butter cookies for my parents. They loved them so much that they asked me to bring another box the next time I visited.

I still remember that afternoon because it wasn't just about eating delicious food. It was about spending quality time with my cousin in a place that had a unique atmosphere and a long tradition. Whenever someone asks me to recommend a bakery in Kolkata, Flurys is always the first place that comes to mind.

Vocabulary

  • Elegant: Stylish and attractive

  • Décor: The style of decoration inside a place

  • Signature: The most famous or special item

  • Creamy: Smooth and rich in texture

  • Atmosphere: The feeling or mood of a place

  • Tradition: A custom or practice passed down over time

  • Recommend: To suggest something because it is good

IELTS Speaking Part 3

Q1. Why are bakeries becoming more popular nowadays?

A. I think bakeries have become more popular because people's lifestyles are much busier than before. Many people don't have enough time to bake at home, so they prefer buying fresh bread, cakes, or pastries from a bakery. In addition, modern bakeries offer a wide variety of products, including healthy and customised options, which attract customers of all ages. Many bakeries have also created a café-like environment where people can relax, work, or meet friends.

Q2. Why do people often buy cakes for celebrations?

A. Cakes have become a symbol of celebration in many cultures. Whether it's a birthday, wedding, graduation, or anniversary, cutting a cake makes the occasion feel more festive and memorable. It also gives family and friends an opportunity to gather together and share a happy moment. Nowadays, customised cakes have become very popular because people like to personalise their celebrations.

Q3. Do you think homemade baked goods are better than those from bakeries?

A. Both have their own advantages. Homemade baked goods are often healthier because people can choose fresh ingredients and control the amount of sugar or butter they use. They also carry emotional value since they are made with care for family and friends. On the other hand, professional bakeries usually offer a wider variety of products and have skilled bakers who can create desserts that are difficult to make at home. I think the choice depends on the occasion and personal preference.

Q4. How have people's eating habits changed over the years?

A. People's eating habits have changed significantly due to globalisation and changing lifestyles. Today, people have access to international cuisines and bakery products that were once difficult to find. At the same time, there is greater awareness of healthy eating, so many customers now look for whole-grain bread, low-sugar desserts, or gluten-free options. However, the popularity of fast food and processed snacks has also increased, which is a growing concern.

Q5. Should traditional bakeries preserve old recipes?

A. Yes, definitely. Traditional recipes are an important part of a country's food culture and history. They allow future generations to experience authentic flavours that have been enjoyed for decades. While bakeries should continue to introduce new products to meet changing tastes, I think they should also preserve their classic recipes. Maintaining a balance between tradition and innovation is the best approach.

Q6. What qualities make a bakery successful?

A. I believe several factors contribute to a bakery's success. First of all, the quality and freshness of its products are essential because customers expect delicious food every time they visit. Good customer service, reasonable prices, and a clean environment also play an important role. In addition, offering unique products or signature desserts can help a bakery stand out from its competitors. Nowadays, many successful bakeries also use social media to promote their products and attract new customers.

Vocabulary

  • Customised: Made to suit a person's specific needs or preferences

  • Authentic: Genuine and true to its original form

  • Globalisation: The increasing connection between countries and cultures

  • Processed: Altered from its natural state, especially food

  • Innovation: The introduction of new ideas or methods

  • Freshness: The quality of being recently made or produced

  • Competitors: Other businesses offering similar products or services
