IELTS Speaking Part 1
Home Decoration Item
Q1. Do you have curtains in your home?
A. Yes, of course. Every room in our house has curtains because they provide privacy and also improve the overall decoration. My mother recently bought light blue curtains for our living room from a store in Kolkata, and they made the room look much brighter and more elegant.
Q2. What kind of curtains do you prefer?
A. I personally prefer simple and light-coloured curtains because they create a calm and spacious atmosphere. Dark curtains sometimes make rooms feel smaller and less welcoming. My favourite ones are white or beige cotton curtains because they look neat and modern.
Q3. Have you ever chosen curtains by yourself?
A. Yes, once I helped my parents choose curtains for my bedroom during the home renovation. I selected grey curtains with simple patterns because I wanted the room to look stylish but not overly decorative. Surprisingly, I really enjoyed comparing different colours and fabrics in the shop.
Q4. Why do people use curtains in their homes?
A. People mainly use curtains for privacy and protection from sunlight. In addition, curtains can make rooms look more attractive and comfortable. During summer, thick curtains in our house help reduce heat from direct sunlight, which makes the rooms cooler. So they are both practical and decorative.
Q5. Do you think curtains are important for home decoration?
A. Yes, definitely. Curtains can completely change the appearance of a room. My aunt recently changed the curtains in her apartment, and the entire place looked more luxurious afterwards. Choosing the right colour and design can make a home feel more cosy and stylish.
Q6. Did people use different kinds of curtains in the past?
A. Yes, I think so. In the past, many people preferred heavier and more traditional curtain designs with dark colours and detailed patterns. My grandmother still likes thick embroidered curtains because they remind her of old-fashioned home décor. Nowadays, modern homes usually use simpler and more minimalist styles.

Sample Answer
One home decoration item that I really like is a large vintage-style wall painting in our living room. My parents bought it around two years ago from an art exhibition in Kolkata when we were redecorating our apartment.
The painting is placed on the main wall above our sofa, so it is one of the first things people notice when they enter the room. It shows a peaceful countryside scene with a river, small boats, and trees during sunset. The colours are mostly warm shades of orange, blue, and green, which create a very calming atmosphere.
I remember accompanying my parents to the exhibition, and there were hundreds of artworks displayed there. However, this painting immediately caught our attention because of its detailed design and realistic appearance. My mother especially liked the soft lighting and natural scenery shown in it, so we finally decided to purchase it.
The main reason I like this decoration item is that it makes our living room look elegant and sophisticated. Whenever I look at the painting, I feel relaxed because the scenery appears peaceful and refreshing. In addition, many guests compliment it whenever they visit our house, which makes it even more special to me. Overall, I think this painting adds beauty, warmth, and personality to our home.

IELTS Speaking Part 3
Q1. Why do people like decorating their homes?
A. I think people enjoy decorating their homes because it makes the environment more comfortable and visually appealing. A well-decorated home can also reflect a person’s personality and lifestyle. For example, my aunt loves decorating her apartment with paintings and indoor plants because they create a peaceful atmosphere. Home decoration often helps people feel more relaxed and emotionally connected to their living space.
Q2. Do modern people care more about home decoration than in the past?
A. Yes, I believe so. Nowadays, many people are more conscious about interior design because social media and online platforms constantly showcase stylish homes and decoration ideas. My friend Nabila recently redesigned her bedroom after getting inspiration from Pinterest. In the past, people focused mainly on functionality, whereas modern homeowners often pay attention to aesthetics as well.
Q3. What kinds of home decoration items are popular in your country?
A. In India, decorative paintings, wall clocks, indoor plants, lamps, and handmade crafts are very popular. During festivals, many families also decorate their homes with lights and traditional artwork. My grandmother especially likes embroidered wall hangings because they give the house a more traditional appearance. Nowadays, minimalist decorations are also becoming fashionable among young people.
Q4. Do you think expensive decoration items are always better?
A. Not necessarily. I think creativity and personal taste are more important than price. Some handmade or simple decoration items can look far more meaningful than expensive luxury products. For instance, my cousin made a small photo collage for our living room, and everyone appreciated it because it had emotional value. Expensive decorations may look impressive, but they do not always create warmth or comfort.
Q5. How can decoration influence people’s mood?
A. Decoration can affect people psychologically because colours, lighting, and arrangement influence emotions. Bright and organised spaces often make people feel energetic and positive, while dark or cluttered rooms may create stress. My mother recently added indoor plants and soft lighting to our study room, and the environment became much calmer and more relaxing. A pleasant living space can improve overall well-being.
Q6. Do you think traditional home decoration styles will disappear in the future?
A. No, I do not think they will disappear completely. Although modern and minimalist styles are becoming more common, many people still appreciate traditional decoration because it represents culture and heritage. For example, my grandparents still use wooden furniture and handcrafted decorations that reflect Bengali traditions. I think traditional and modern styles will continue to exist together in different ways.
