This IELTS Speaking Practice Test has 3 Sections. In Part 1, you will be asked questions by your examiner for 4-5 minutes about the topic of Self-Improving. In Part 2, you will be given a cue card for a monologue of 2 minutes based on the topic Describe A Habit You Developed for Self-Improvement, followed by more in-depth questions for another 4-5 minutes based on the cue card in Part 3. Overall, the speaking test takes 15 minutes.

Q1. Do you enjoy improving yourself?

A. Yes, definitely. I believe self-improvement is essential because it helps people become more confident and productive. Recently, I started working on my communication skills by practising English speaking with my friend Amaan every evening. Although it was difficult at first, I gradually became more fluent and comfortable expressing my ideas. I find personal growth very satisfying.

Q2. What kind of self-improvement activities do you do?

A. I usually focus on improving my academic skills and daily habits. For example, I recently began maintaining a study schedule to manage my time more efficiently. I also watch motivational podcasts by speakers like Jay Shetty because they encourage me to stay disciplined and positive. Small improvements in routine can make a huge difference over time.

Q3. Have you ever learned something new to improve yourself?

A. Yes, last year I learned basic video editing because I wanted to become more creative and technically skilled. My cousin Farhan introduced me to an editing app called CapCut, and I started experimenting with short travel videos. Initially, I made many mistakes, but after regular practice, I became much better. Learning new skills always gives me a sense of achievement.

A. I think many people struggle with self-improvement because it requires patience, consistency, and self-discipline. Some individuals lose motivation quickly when they do not see immediate results. For instance, my friend Riya stopped going to the gym after only two weeks because she expected rapid progress. In reality, meaningful improvement usually takes time and continuous effort.

A. It can be both helpful and harmful. On the positive side, social media provides access to educational content, fitness tips, and motivational videos. I personally follow several productivity channels on YouTube that share useful study techniques. However, excessive social media usage can also distract people and reduce concentration if not managed properly.

A. I think self-improvement is important for people of all ages. Young people may focus more on education and career development, while older people might work on health, relationships, or emotional well-being. My uncle Tariq, for example, recently started learning yoga to reduce stress and improve his lifestyle. Continuous self-improvement helps people adapt to different stages of life.

Sample Answer

One habit that greatly improved my life was developing a daily reading routine. I started this habit around a year ago when my English teacher, Mrs Banerjee, advised me to read regularly in order to improve my vocabulary and communication skills.

Initially, I began by reading for only fifteen minutes every night before going to bed. I mostly read novels, newspaper articles, and self-improvement books. One of the first books I completed was Atomic Habits by James Clear, which motivated me to become more disciplined and consistent in my daily life. Nowadays, I usually spend at least thirty to forty minutes reading, especially during the evening when my surroundings are quieter and I can concentrate better.

Maintaining this habit was not easy in the beginning because I often became distracted by social media and entertainment apps. To solve this problem, I started keeping my phone away while reading and created a fixed schedule for myself. Gradually, reading became a natural part of my routine rather than a forced activity.

This habit has improved my life in several ways. First of all, it has significantly enhanced my vocabulary and speaking ability, which helped me become more confident during presentations and conversations. Secondly, reading has made me more knowledgeable and open-minded because I am exposed to different ideas and perspectives. Most importantly, it has improved my concentration and reduced my stress levels. Overall, developing this reading habit was one of the most beneficial decisions I have ever made.

Self-development often increases confidence and creates more opportunities in both personal and professional life.

Q2. Do you think failure can help people improve?

A. Yes, definitely. Failure often teaches lessons that success cannot. When people make mistakes, they usually become more careful and determined afterwards. I remember my friend Priya failing her driving test the first time because she became nervous, but after more practice, she passed confidently. Difficult experiences can strengthen a person’s patience and resilience.

Q3. Is it easier for children or adults to change their habits?

A. In my opinion, children usually adapt more easily because their minds are still developing. Adults often become attached to fixed routines and may resist change. For instance, my younger cousin quickly learned healthy eating habits after joining a sports academy, whereas my uncle still struggles to reduce junk food despite health problems. However, motivated adults can also successfully change if they remain consistent.

A. Teachers can motivate students by appreciating their efforts rather than focusing only on marks. Positive encouragement often increases confidence and willingness to learn. My mathematics teacher used to praise small improvements, which motivated many weak students to work harder. Schools can also organise workshops on communication, leadership, and time management to help students grow personally.

Q5. Do you think people today are under pressure to improve constantly?

A. Yes, especially because of social media and competition. People frequently compare themselves with others online, which creates pressure to appear successful or talented all the time. My friend Nabila sometimes feels stressed after seeing influencers constantly promoting perfect lifestyles. While self-improvement is important, I think people should also focus on mental peace and realistic expectations.

Q6. Can hobbies help with self-development?

A. Absolutely. Hobbies often help people develop creativity, patience, and problem-solving skills. For example, my cousin Arif became much more confident after joining a theatre group because acting improved his communication abilities. Hobbies also reduce stress and allow people to discover hidden talents. In many cases, they contribute to both emotional and personal growth.
