This IELTS Speaking Practice Test has 3 Sections. In Part 1, you will be asked questions by your examiner for 4-5 minutes about the topic of Studies. In Part 2, you will be given a cue card for a monologue of 2 minutes based on the topic Describe A Subject You Enjoy Studying, followed by more in-depth questions for another 4-5 minutes based on the cue card in Part 3. Overall, the speaking test takes 15 minutes.

IELTS Speaking Part 1

Q1. What are you studying at the moment?

A. At the moment, I am mainly focusing on my academic studies along with IELTS preparation. I spend a lot of time improving my English skills, especially speaking and writing, because I hope to study abroad in the future. Besides that, I also regularly read articles and watch interviews on platforms like BBC Learning English to expand my vocabulary and improve my fluency.

Q2. Do you enjoy studying?

A. Yes, I genuinely enjoy studying, particularly subjects that encourage critical thinking and creativity. For example, I really like English literature and history because they allow me to learn about different cultures and historical events. However, I sometimes find studying stressful before exams because of the pressure to perform well.

Q3. Where do you usually study?

A. I usually study at home because I can concentrate better in a peaceful environment. I have a small study corner near my window where I keep my books, notes, and laptop organised. Occasionally, I also visit cafés like Café Coffee Day with my friend Armaan when I want a change of atmosphere and need some motivation to study.

Q4. What is the most difficult part of studying?

A. For me, the most difficult part is staying focused for a long period of time without getting distracted. Social media platforms like Instagram and YouTube can easily interrupt my concentration if I am not careful. Because of that, I often switch off my phone or keep it in another room while studying important subjects.

Q5. Do you prefer studying alone or with others?

A. I mostly prefer studying alone because it helps me concentrate more effectively and learn at my own pace. When I study independently, I can organise my schedule according to my comfort. However, before important exams, I sometimes study with friends like Sana and Armaan because discussing difficult topics together makes learning more engaging and productive.

Q6. Has technology changed the way people study?

A. Yes, technology has completely transformed modern education. Nowadays, students can attend online classes, watch educational videos, and access digital libraries within seconds. During the pandemic, for example, many students relied heavily on platforms like Zoom and Google Classroom for their studies. I think technology has made learning far more flexible and convenient than it was in the past.

Sample Answer

One subject that I genuinely enjoy studying is English literature. I became interested in it during my school years, when my English teacher, Mrs Sen, introduced our class to short stories and poems by writers such as William Shakespeare and Rabindranath Tagore. At first, I only studied the subject for examinations, but gradually I developed a real passion for it because I found the stories emotionally powerful and intellectually stimulating.

Nowadays, I study English literature in several ways. I regularly read novels, articles, and essays, and I also watch interviews and documentaries on platforms like YouTube and BBC Learning English. In addition, I sometimes discuss books with my friend Armaan, who also enjoys literature. These conversations help me understand different interpretations and improve my speaking skills at the same time.

What I enjoy most about this subject is that it allows me to explore different cultures, historical periods, and human emotions through writing. For example, when I read novels like Pride and Prejudice or The Alchemist, I feel as if I am experiencing different worlds and perspectives. I think literature not only improves vocabulary and communication skills but also develops imagination and empathy.

Because of these reasons, English literature has become much more than just an academic subject for me. It is now one of my favourite hobbies and an important part of my daily life.

Teachers also play an important role because an enthusiastic teacher can make even a difficult subject feel interesting and engaging.

Q2. Do you think examinations are the best way to measure intelligence?

A. Not entirely. Although examinations are useful for testing academic knowledge, they cannot measure creativity, practical skills, or emotional intelligence properly. For instance, some students perform poorly in exams because of stress, even though they are highly talented in real-life situations. I believe intelligence should be evaluated in multiple ways instead of relying only on written tests.

A. Technology has transformed education enormously by making learning more accessible and flexible. Nowadays, students can attend online classes, watch tutorials on YouTube, and access digital libraries from anywhere. Q4. Why do some people continue studying even after finishing university?

A. Many people continue studying because learning is important for career development and personal growth. In competitive industries like information technology or business, employees often need to update their skills regularly. Besides professional reasons, some individuals simply enjoy gaining knowledge and exploring new ideas throughout their lives.

Q5. Should schools focus more on practical skills?

A. Yes, definitely. I believe schools should balance academic subjects with practical life skills such as communication, financial management, and problem-solving. Many students graduate with strong theoretical knowledge but struggle with everyday responsibilities. Teaching practical skills could help young people become more independent and confident in adulthood.
