This IELTS Speaking Practice Test has 3 Sections. In Part 1, you will be asked questions for 4-5 minutes about Hobby by your examiner. In Part 2, you will be given a cue card for a monologue of 2 minutes based on the topic Your Favourite Hobby, followed by more in-depth questions for another 4-5 minutes based on the cue card in Part 3. Overall, the speaking test takes 15 minutes.

IELTS Speaking Part 1

Hobby

Q. What do you usually do in your free time?

A. In my free time, I usually listen to music, watch movies, or go for a walk. Sometimes I meet up with friends or spend time reading books, depending on my mood.

Q. Do you prefer mornings or evenings?

A. I prefer evenings because I can relax after work or study. The weather is usually cooler, and it’s a nice time to unwind or spend time with my family.

Q. How often do you spend time with your family?

A. I try to spend time with my family every weekend. We usually have dinner together or watch a movie. Even though everyone is busy, we make sure to stay connected.

Vocabulary

Sample Answer:

My favourite hobby is reading. I’ve been interested in it since I was a child, and it has remained an important part of my daily routine. I usually read in the evenings before going to bed, as it helps me unwind and relax after a long day. I enjoy reading different types of books, but my favourites are novels and biographies. Novels allow me to escape into imaginary worlds and experience different emotions through the characters, while biographies inspire me by showing how people have overcome challenges in real life. Sometimes I also enjoy reading short stories or articles online when I don’t have time for a full book. Reading helps me escape from everyday stress and gives me the opportunity to learn about different cultures and ideas. I find it both relaxing and educational at the same time. Whenever I’m reading, I feel completely absorbed, and it’s one of the few activities that really helps me focus. This hobby has also benefited me in many ways. It has improved my vocabulary and concentration, and I think it has also helped me to think more creatively. Through reading, I’ve learned to see the world from different perspectives, which has made me more open-minded and understanding toward others. Overall, reading is not just a way to pass the time for me; it’s something that enriches my mind and broadens my horizons. I can’t imagine my life without it.

Q. Should schools encourage students to develop hobbies?

A. Yes, schools should encourage hobbies because they help students discover their interests and talents. It also teaches them balance and helps reduce academic stress.

Q. Can hobbies help people develop important life skills?

A. Absolutely. Many hobbies, like playing sports or learning a musical instrument, teach discipline, teamwork, time management, and problem-solving. Even individual hobbies like painting or writing can improve creativity and concentration, which are useful in daily life and work.

Q. Do you think people spend enough time on hobbies today?

A. Not always. Many people are busy with work or study and often prioritise responsibilities over leisure. This can lead to stress or burnout. I think it’s important to consciously allocate time for hobbies to maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Q. How do hobbies differ between adults and children?

A. Hobbies often differ because of interests and responsibilities. Children usually enjoy playful or creative hobbies like drawing, sports, or games, while adults might prefer hobbies that help them relax or learn new skills, such as reading, cooking, or fitness activities.
