Canada is one of the most popular countries welcoming immigrants from around the world. With a thriving economy, world-class education, reliable public infrastructure, and robust social services, it is one such location where everyone wants to live and work.
To demonstrate your proficiency in English, one of the tests that Canada accepts is the CELPIP exam. Here is everything you need to know about the CELPIP exam.
What is CELPIP?
The Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program, better known as the CELPIP exam, is an assessment test that measures your proficiency in the English language. It ascertains your proficiency in terms of four aspects: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
The test was developed at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in 2002 and has been administered since then. This test is taken by individuals looking to seek permanent residency or citizenship in Canada. So, if you’re planning on living in Canada for the long run, the chances of you having to take this test are pretty high.

The CELPIP exam is designed to test your knowledge and command of the English language. It measures whether you are capable enough to communicate and survive in the country through your control over your language. Thus, this test is primarily of two types: the CELPIP General Test and the CELPIP General LS Test.
1. CELPIP General Test
The CELPIP General test is the IRCC-approved test to evaluate permanent residency applications. It is also used to evaluate applicants moving to Canada due to professional designations. It takes about 3 hours to complete and evaluates four parameters of your control over the English language: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.
2. CELPIP General LS Test
The CELPIP General LS test is the IRCC-approved version of the CELPIP exam which is used to evaluate applications for Canadian citizenship. It measures your ability in terms of listening and speaking only and is about one hour long. Moreover, it can only be administered in Canada.
