The family visa Kuwait (also known as the dependent visa Kuwait) is a type of visa issued to close family members of legal residents of Kuwait, and the requirements for this visa have undergone significant changes at the end of 2025, with the most common reason for visa applications to be delayed being the incorrect fee or salary. 

This blog guides you through the eligibility criteria, fee structure, processing time and what's changed with Kuwait's latest residency rules; including the complete list of family visa requirements in Kuwait to be aware of before you apply.

What is a Family Visa Kuwait?

A family visa Kuwait (dependent visa Kuwait) is a visa that enables a legal resident (the sponsor) to bring his spouse or dependents (sons and daughters) to reside in Kuwait with him. It is issued under Article 22 of the residency law and the sponsor needs to possess a valid work or residence permit to file an application. 

Kuwait Visas are generally valid for 1-3 years and can be renewed as long as the sponsor's own residence remains valid. The rules for sponsoring aren't entirely symmetric for husbands and wives, and eligibility for children is based on their gender and age, both of which are detailed below.

Kuwait Family Visa Eligibility Requirements

Below are the requirements for both the sponsor and dependent to be eligible for the Kuwait Family Visa:

Sponsor eligibility:

• Must have a valid residence permit (Iqama) issued by the government of Kuwait (under Article 17 or 18)

• Must meet the minimum salary requirement (see below)

• Must hold a university degree

• The field of study and professional designation must directly match the sponsor's actual job profile in Kuwait

• Must show proof of suitable accommodation for the dependent 

Dependent eligibility:

• Be a spouse or child of the sponsor; female children may be sponsored at any age (until marriage), and male children may not be sponsored after age 21.

• Important Symmetry from the Kuwaiti perspective, a wife can sponsor a husband and children, and a husband can sponsor his wife and children on a standard family visa, but from the foreigner's point of view, it is very common for the husband to be unable to sponsor his wife and children on a standard family visa, as the Kuwaitis assume the rules are symmetric.

• Passport of the dependent should be valid for at least two years from the date of application.

• Must submit documentation of relationship (marriage registered and/or birth certificate) certified and translated.

• Of course, parents and other relatives may be sponsored as well, but not via the immediate family option as they fall into the category of “Other Dependents”, and the fees vary.  

• It is necessary for the newborns to be registered and obtain a residece permit within 4 months of their birth in Kuwait.

Kuwait Family Visa Salary Requirements

This is usually the first thing that trips people up, so it's worth its own section. The sponsor must earn a minimum of KD 800 per month, verified through an official salary certificate from the employer - and this figure is periodically re-checked, so a pay cut after approval can put an existing family visa at risk.

• A university degree is now required, rather than sponsors.

• The sponsor's field of study and job title in their file must exactly reflect the sponsor's real professional title in Kuwait, else it may be a frequent cause of rejection of applications.

• The degree and profession-match is now checked in conjunction with the KD 800 threshold.

Tip: If your earnings are near KD 800, the sooner you can obtain your salary certificate, the better, the authorities will want to see a fresh certificate if there is a gap between the date of the salary certificate and the date of your application.

How to Apply for a Kuwait Family Visa 

Interested in applying for a family visa in Kuwait? The whole process is now done through official government channels in person:

• Schedule an appointment: Register for your appointment on the government's Meta Portal with the sponsor's Kuwait Civil ID and Serial Number.

• Visit Immigration: go to the General Department of Immigration in the governorate at the appointed time. 

• Submit required paperwork:

• Filled out official entry visa application form

• A copy of the sponsor's civil ID and work permit/salary certificate.

• A copy of the parents' passport (must be at least 2 years old)

• Valid and translated family relationships (marriage and birth certificates)

• Pay fees and complete stamping: pay entry visa fees and fill out the stamping. Your family will then undergo normal medical compliance and make sure that they have the necessary health insurance in place, which is a requirement for the visa to be stamped on the residency permit.

Family Visa Kuwait Price: Updated 2026 Fee Structure

The fee structure has been completely harmonized by Resolution No. 2249/2025 (effective 23 December 2025) and is identical for all residency types. The price of a family visa to Kuwait is broken down as follows:

Note: The above fee structure is the standardised fee structure introduced in the Executive Regulations in November 2025 which replaced the flat fee range of 100-150 KWD cited in previous guides. The key difference to remember is immediate family (spouse and eligible children) is KWD 20 per year, and other relatives, parents, etc., is KWD 300 per year.

Family Visa Kuwait Price for Indian Applicants

Application fee in Indian Rupees (all in INR) is INR 9,463 per application with 18% GST through the official network of the Kuwait Visa Application Centre (VAC) from India, for the short-term joining family visit visa (up to 90 days). 

This is in addition to any long term dependent visa (Iqama) fees mentioned above which are paid in Kuwait by the sponsor who applies for residency in Kuwait.

Family Visa Kuwait Processing Time

Note: The processing time for your documents to be attested and you to be accepted as a dependent to a family member in Kuwait generally takes 4-8 weeks depending on your country of origin.

Processing Time for Indian Applicants

Applicants who apply for the joining family visit visa from the official KVAs in India will find that the processing takes 3 working days for applications made in Mumbai and New Delhi while it takes 5-7 working days for applications made in Hyderabad, Chennai or Kochi, apart from the Iqama processing time of 2-4 weeks after the dependent enters Kuwait. 

The applicant should also have a  Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) and a medical clearance from an authorised vendor at this stage. 

Kuwait Dependent Visa New Rules 

Here are a couple of things to be aware of before you apply:

• Statutory deadlines return September 1, 2026: The MOI has confirmed that the leniencies implemented during and after the pandemic with exceptional extensions and automatic absence permits will come to an end. Kuwait is relaxing its statutory deadlines for visitors and residents who are abroad, but it is returning to the strict deadlines that were in place prior to the pandemic.

• Restructuring of fees: The former fee system of a flat fee per year has been replaced by fees being fully standardised by dependent category (KWD 20/year for immediate family; KWD 300/year for parents and other relatives).

• Now includes a mandatory degree requirement and more stringent profession match requirement and is unchanged from the 2024 raise of KD 550.

• Six months residency rule: Dependent (as with other residents) will risk loss of their status on the same day if they are absent from Kuwait for more than six consecutive months, except for specific categories of residents. This is not part of the family visa rules themselves, but it does impact on all dependents who are travelling regularly especially now that the automatic absences are coming to an end.

• Nationality-based restrictions: Additional delays or restrictions to the processing of certain nationalities are a concern, such as Iraqi, Syrian and Afghan applicants.

Limitations of the Kuwait Family Dependent Visa

The Kuwait Family Dependent Visa is subject to certain restrictions.There are restrictions with the Kuwait Family Dependent Visa.

• It is illegal for dependents to work without first converting their visa into a work permit.

• Visa is attached to the sponsor - when the sponsor's residency is cancelled, so are the dependent's visa.

• If the absences last for over six months, the visa may be cancelled.

• Full duration of stay requires valid health insurance.
