IELTS Speaking Part 1

Q1. What do you understand by digital addiction?

A. Digital addiction refers to the excessive use of digital devices such as smartphones, computers, or tablets. People who are digitally addicted often spend a large amount of time online, sometimes at the expense of their studies, work, or social life. I think it has become a growing concern in modern society because technology is now a part of almost every aspect of daily life.

Q2. Do you think you spend too much time on digital devices?

A. Sometimes, yes. I use my phone and laptop for studying, communication, and entertainment, so it is easy to lose track of time. For example, I might intend to watch one educational video but end up spending an hour browsing different content. Because of this, I try to set limits on my screen time and take regular breaks.

Q3. Why do many people become addicted to digital devices?

A. I think one reason is that digital platforms are designed to keep users engaged. Social media notifications, short videos, and online games provide instant entertainment and satisfaction. My friend Ethan often says that he checks his phone without even realising it because it has become a habit. Over time, these habits can develop into digital addiction.

Q4. Do you think young people are more affected by digital addiction?

A. Yes, definitely. Young people grow up surrounded by technology and often use digital devices for education, communication, and recreation. As a result, they may spend several hours a day online. While technology offers many benefits, excessive use can reduce face-to-face interaction and affect concentration. Therefore, maintaining a healthy balance is very important.

Q5. What problems can digital addiction cause?

A. Digital addiction can lead to several problems, including reduced productivity, poor sleep quality, and difficulty concentrating. It may also affect physical health because people spend long periods sitting and looking at screens. In addition, excessive device use can sometimes weaken real-life relationships if people spend more time online than with family and friends.

Q6. How can people reduce digital addiction?

A. People can reduce digital addiction by setting screen-time limits and engaging in offline activities. For example, they can exercise, read books, or spend time with friends instead of constantly using their phones. My friend Charlotte recently started leaving her phone in another room while studying, and she noticed a significant improvement in her focus. Small changes like these can make a big difference over time.

Cue Card

Describe A Time When You Reduced Your Screen Time

You should say:

  • When it happened

  • Why did you decide to reduce your screen time

  • What changes did you make

  • And explain how you felt afterwards

Sample Answer

A time when I reduced my screen time was during my final examination period last year. At that time, I was spending a large amount of time on my smartphone, especially on social media platforms and video-sharing apps. Although I initially used them for relaxation, I gradually realised that they were consuming several hours of my day. Whenever I checked my phone for a few minutes, I often ended up scrolling for much longer than I intended.

I decided to reduce my screen time because I wanted to focus more on my studies. My exams were approaching, and I felt that constant notifications and online distractions were affecting my concentration. I was also sleeping later than usual because I frequently stayed up browsing the internet.

To address the problem, I set daily screen-time limits and turned off most notifications. I also kept my phone in another room while studying and replaced some of my online activities with reading books and going for walks. At first, it was difficult because I was used to checking my phone regularly, but after a few days, it became much easier.

The results were very positive. I became more productive, completed my revision on time, and felt less stressed. My sleep schedule improved, and I had more time to spend with my family. Most importantly, I realised that I did not need to be connected to my phone all the time.

Overall, reducing my screen time helped me develop healthier habits and improve both my academic performance and my overall well-being.

  • Scrolling: Moving through content on a screen

  • Distractions: Things that take attention away from a task

  • Revision: The process of reviewing study materials

  • Productive: Able to achieve useful results

  • Well-being: Overall health and happiness

IELTS Speaking Part 3

Q1. Why do people spend so much time on digital devices nowadays?

A. People spend a lot of time on digital devices because technology has become an essential part of modern life. Smartphones and computers are used for work, education, communication, shopping, and entertainment. In addition, social media platforms and streaming services are designed to keep users engaged for long periods. As a result, many people spend more time online than they realise.

Q2. What are the disadvantages of spending too much time on screens?

A. Excessive screen time can have several negative effects. It may reduce productivity, affect sleep quality, and cause eye strain. People who spend long hours using digital devices may also become less physically active. Furthermore, excessive use of social media can sometimes increase stress and reduce face-to-face interaction. Therefore, maintaining a healthy balance is very important.

Q3. Do young people use digital devices differently from older people?

A. Yes, they generally do. Young people tend to use digital devices for social networking, online gaming, and entertainment, while older adults often use them for communication, work, or accessing information. Younger generations are usually more comfortable with new technology because they have grown up with it. However, people of all ages are becoming increasingly dependent on digital devices.

Q4. Should schools teach students about digital addiction?

A. Yes, definitely. Students should learn about the benefits and risks of technology from an early age. Schools can educate them about responsible device usage, online safety, and time management. This would help students develop healthy digital habits and prevent excessive dependence on technology. Such lessons could be just as important as traditional subjects in today's world.

Q5. How can people reduce their screen time?

A. People can reduce their screen time by setting daily limits and engaging in offline activities. For example, they can spend more time exercising, reading books, or participating in hobbies. Turning off unnecessary notifications and avoiding phones during meals can also be helpful. Small lifestyle changes often make a significant difference over time.

Q6. Do you think digital addiction will become a bigger problem in the future?

A. It is possible. As technology becomes more advanced and accessible, people may spend even more time online. New forms of entertainment, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence could make digital devices even more appealing. However, awareness of digital addiction is also increasing. I think future generations will need to learn how to use technology wisely while maintaining a healthy balance between online and offline life.
