IELTS Speaking Part 1

Scented Candles

Q1. Do you like candles?

A. Yes, I do. I find candles very relaxing and visually appealing. I especially enjoy scented candles because they create a pleasant atmosphere in a room. Sometimes, I light a lavender-scented candle while reading a book or studying in the evening. It helps me feel calm and focused. I also like the soft glow of candlelight because it makes the environment feel cosy and peaceful, especially during rainy evenings.

Q2. Do you use candles often?

A. Not every day, but I use them occasionally. I usually light candles during special occasions such as birthdays, family gatherings, or festive celebrations. My cousin Zara often buys decorative candles for her room, and they make the space look much more inviting. I think candles can add warmth and charm to any environment. During power cuts, which happen from time to time, candles can also be quite useful.

Q3. What kinds of candles do you prefer?

A. I prefer scented candles, particularly those with lavender, vanilla, or jasmine fragrances. These scents are soothing and help me relax after a busy day. I also like candles that come in attractive glass containers because they can be used as decorative items. In my opinion, a good candle should look beautiful and smell pleasant at the same time. Recently, I bought a jasmine-scented candle from a local shop, and I was impressed by how long the fragrance lasted.

Q4. Have candles become less important nowadays?

A. In terms of lighting, yes, because electricity is widely available. However, candles are still important for decoration, celebrations, and creating a relaxing atmosphere. My aunt Farzana often uses candles during family dinners to make the setting feel more elegant. So, while their practical use has decreased, their decorative value remains significant. Many people also use candles for meditation, yoga, or simply to unwind after a stressful day.

Q5. Why do people use candles during celebrations?

A. People often use candles because they symbolise celebration, warmth, and happiness. Birthday cakes are a good example, as blowing out candles is a tradition enjoyed by many people. During festivals and special events, candles can create a festive and welcoming atmosphere. They also make celebrations feel more memorable and meaningful. In some cultures, candles are associated with hope, positivity, and good fortune.

Q6. Would you like to receive candles as a gift?

A. Yes, especially if they are high-quality scented candles. They are practical, decorative, and suitable for many occasions. My friend Arman once gave me a set of handmade candles with different fragrances, and I really appreciated the gift. Since candles can be both useful and aesthetically pleasing, I think they make excellent presents. Moreover, they are versatile gifts because almost anyone can enjoy them regardless of age or interests.

Sample Answer

One scented candle that I remember very well was a jasmine-scented candle that I bought from Aroma Bliss, a small home décor shop in Kolkata, about a year ago.

I purchased it while shopping with my friend Ananya during the winter holidays. The candle came in an elegant glass container with a wooden lid, and it had a beautiful white colour. What attracted me the most was its fragrance. It had a rich jasmine scent that was neither too strong nor too mild. As soon as I smelled it in the shop, I knew I wanted to buy it.

After bringing it home, I placed it on my study table and used it mainly in the evenings. Whenever I was reading a novel, preparing for an exam, or simply relaxing after a busy day, I would light the candle. The soothing fragrance quickly filled my room and created a peaceful atmosphere. Even my cousin Meher noticed the pleasant scent and asked me where I had bought it.

I remember this candle so well because it helped me relax during a particularly stressful period of my life. At that time, I was preparing for several important examinations, and the calming aroma made my study sessions much more enjoyable. In addition, the candle lasted for several months, so I used it regularly.

Overall, this jasmine-scented candle left a lasting impression on me because of its wonderful fragrance, elegant design, and the sense of comfort it provided. It was a simple purchase, but it became one of my favourite decorative items.

IELTS Speaking Part 3

Q1. Why do people buy scented candles nowadays?

A. People buy scented candles because they help create a relaxing and pleasant atmosphere. Many individuals use them to reduce stress after a busy day or to make their homes feel more welcoming. My friend Ananya often lights a lavender-scented candle while reading because she finds the fragrance very calming. In addition, scented candles are often used as decorative items.

Q2. Do you think scents can affect people's moods?

A. Yes, definitely. Different scents can create different emotional responses. For example, lavender is often associated with relaxation, while citrus scents can make people feel more energetic and refreshed. My cousin Meher uses jasmine-scented candles because she believes they help her concentrate while studying. Although reactions vary from person to person, scents can have a noticeable impact on mood.

Q3. Why are candles popular as gifts?

A. Candles are popular gifts because they are both practical and attractive. They are suitable for many occasions, such as birthdays, housewarming parties, and festivals. My aunt Farzana often gives scented candles as gifts because they are elegant and widely appreciated. They also come in a variety of fragrances and designs, making them a versatile gift choice.

Q4. Have candles become more decorative than practical?

A. Yes, I think so. In the past, candles were mainly used as a source of light, especially before electricity became widely available. Nowadays, most people use candles for decoration, relaxation, or special occasions. My friend Arman recently bought several decorative candles to enhance the appearance of his living room. Their aesthetic value is often more important than their practical use.

Q5. What kinds of products help people relax at home?

A. There are many products that can help people relax, including scented candles, essential oils, soft lighting, and comfortable furniture. Some people also enjoy listening to music or using aroma diffusers. My cousin Zara uses a diffuser with lavender oil every evening because it helps her unwind after work. These products can create a peaceful environment and improve overall well-being.

Q6. Do you think people today experience more stress than in the past?

A. In many cases, yes. Modern life is often fast-paced, and people face pressures related to work, education, and finances. My uncle frequently says that technology has made life more convenient but has also increased expectations and workloads. As a result, many people actively look for ways to relax and manage stress. This may explain why products such as scented candles have become increasingly popular.
