Section 1
Hillside Community Library — Membership & Guidelines
Hillside Community Library (HCL) offers a wide range of resources for residents, including books, magazines, e-books, and study spaces. Below is essential information for library users.
1. Opening Hours
- Monday–Friday: 9:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m.
- Saturday: 10:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.
- Sunday: 12:00 p.m.–5:00 p.m.
Holiday hours may vary. Special announcements are posted on the library website and at the entrance.
2. Membership
Residents can register for free membership with proof of address. Non-residents may apply for a paid membership. Library cards are valid for 3 years and must be renewed afterwards.
3. Borrowing Rules
- Standard loans: up to 14 days
- Reference books: in-library use only
- Maximum of 10 items per card
- Late returns incur fines of $0.50 per day
4. E-Resources
E-books, audiobooks, and online journals are available to members. Access requires a library card number and PIN. Members can reserve digital materials online and receive notifications when available.
5. Facilities & Study Areas
Quiet study zones are designated on the second floor. Group study rooms must be booked in advance. Eating and drinking are prohibited in the study areas but allowed in the lounge café.
6. Computer & Internet Use
Public computers are available for member use. Sessions are limited to 1 hour if others are waiting. Wi-Fi access is free for members, and printing is charged per page.
7. Conduct & Support
Users must maintain a quiet environment and handle books carefully. Assistance is available at the reception desk or via the online help portal. Complaints are usually addressed within 48 hours.

Section 2
Lakeside Manufacturing — Health & Safety Policy

History of Coffee
Coffee has been one of the world’s most popular beverages for centuries, with a fascinating history.
1. Early Discoveries
Coffee is believed to have been discovered in Ethiopia in the 9th century. According to legend, a goat herder noticed his goats were energetic after eating certain red berries. The berries were later brewed into a drink by local monks.
2. Spread Across the World
By the 15th century, coffee reached the Arabian Peninsula, where it became a popular drink in Yemen and Mecca. Coffeehouses, known as qahveh khaneh, became social and cultural hubs for discussion and trade.
3. Coffee in Europe
In the 17th century, coffee arrived in Europe. Coffeehouses opened in major cities such as London, Paris, and Vienna. They became centres of intellectual exchange and were nicknamed “penny universities” because conversation and learning were accessible to all.
4. Coffee Plantations
European colonial powers established coffee plantations in the Caribbean, South America and Asia. Enslaved labour was often used, and the industry grew rapidly to meet increasing demand.
5. Modern Coffee Culture
Today, coffee is consumed worldwide in various forms, including espresso, cappuccino, latte, and cold brew. Coffee chains and speciality cafés have made coffee a global cultural phenomenon.
